Community-Rooted.
Mission-Driven.

Why SCHI Was Formed

Skyway Community Housing Initiative was formed to address a persistent gap in the Skyway neighborhood and the broader unincorporated King County area: the shortage of stable, affordable homes for working families. SCHI brings together community leadership, public-sector relationships, and a network of professional partners to develop housing that is built to last and structured to stay affordable.

Durable affordable housing takes more than financing. It takes community trust, competent development, and a long-term commitment to stewardship. SCHI is built as a permanent institutional home for that work, rather than a vehicle for a single project.

Mission & Vision

Mission

To advance affordable housing, community stability, and resident opportunity through locally grounded development, strong partnerships, and long-term stewardship.

Vision

A Skyway neighborhood, and a region, where every working family can afford a stable, dignified home in the community where they live, work, and belong.

Community Served

Working families, essential workers, and long-term residents of unincorporated King County and the Skyway neighborhood who are priced out of market-rate housing and underserved by the existing affordable housing supply.

Our Values

Affordability

Homes structured to be accessible to working families and financed to stay affordable for the long term, not only at opening.

Community Stability

Development that strengthens the existing community fabric rather than displacing it, with resident-centered design and local workforce participation.

Stewardship

Long-term accountability for the properties SCHI sponsors, managed to maintain quality, affordability, and community benefit over time.

Partnership

Deep collaboration with public agencies, community organizations, lenders, technical partners, and residents to assemble the capacity each project requires.

Resident Opportunity

Housing as a platform that connects residents with services, workforce development, and the stability that makes other opportunity possible.

Transparency & Accountability

Open governance and clear reporting to residents, partners, and the community on how projects are financed, built, and operated.

Our Development Model

SCHI serves as the nonprofit sponsor and institutional home for each development it advances. Individual projects are structured around SCHI's mission and governed by its board, while professional partners (architects, contractors, property managers, legal counsel, and capital providers) are engaged to execute each component. SCHI is the community-anchored sponsor that brings the project together and holds accountability for the outcome, not a for-profit developer.

This model is designed to be repeatable: the same governance structure, the same community-first values, and the same institutional relationships can support a pipeline of projects beyond Skyway 120.
